There's a certain magic that envelops me whenever I arrive in Flensburg. Always when I arrive in Flensburg, I get the feeling that I am in Denmark. The Danish influence is so strong that it feels like I've crossed the border into a different country, even though I'm still in Germany.

Flensburg is a quaint and charming city, perfect for a peaceful getaway. The old town is a picturesque mix of colorful Danish-style buildings, cobblestone streets, and inviting courtyards. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of your surroundings.

One of the best things about Flensburg is that it's an affordable destination for tourists. Whether you're staying in a cozy guesthouse, a charming bed and breakfast, or a well-equipped hotel, you'll find that prices are very reasonable compared to other popular European cities. This makes it an ideal spot for budget-conscious travelers who still want to experience the charm and culture of a historic city.

From the dual-language street signs to the Danish bakeries offering delicious pastries, the cultural blend is seamless and adds to the city's unique charm. • The harbor: One of the most enjoyable experiences in Flensburg is taking a walk around the harbor. This route offers a unique perspective of the city from the opposite side, where it’s much quieter with hardly any traffic. You can also discover a bit of history along the way. It’s here that the fishing industry began 150 years ago. In one of the old fishermen’s cottages, a fisherman shares stories about how the industry has evolved over time. But I won’t spoil everything—there’s much more to discover! There are also several dining options where you can sit back, relax, and take in the beautiful views

As mentioned above, you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast with fresh Danish pastries and a cup of coffee at one of the many cozy cafes. One of the most pleasant surprises in Flensburg is the abundance of affordable Asian restaurants. Whether you're craving sushi, Thai curries, or Vietnamese pho, you'll find plenty of options to indulge in delicious, authentic Asian flavors. Yesterday, I enjoyed my meal at Buddha Lounge, seated in the Hotel die alte Poste.

If you find yourself in Flensburg, one restaurant you should definitely visit is “die Weinstube”. This cozy establishment offers an inviting atmosphere where you can enjoy delectable Flammkuchen paired with excellent wines. The combination of delicious food, fine wine, and the warm ambiance makes it a dining experience you won't want to miss.

Whether you're taking a stroll along the harbor, exploring the historic sites, or simply sitting in a park enjoying the fresh air, the city provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation.

A note for pedestrians: Google Maps needs an update

As much as I enjoy wandering the charming streets of Flensburg, there's one small hiccup that travelers should be aware of. The only thing I have noticed is that for walkers, Google Maps is not up-to-date, and you often have to walk longer to get to your destination. While this can lead to some pleasant, unexpected discoveries, it might be time for Google to come to Flensburg and renew the maps for pedestrians. Until then, be prepared for a bit of extra adventure as you navigate this beautiful city.
